It depends on who you are, where you are cycling, the weather, who you’re cycling with.
My ride to work is neither fun nor not fun. It’s on bike trails mostly, so it’s not stressful, but they aren’t especially picturesque, and ultimately all I’m doing is putting the miles in to get there. It’s not fun, but I don’t hate it.
Two days ago, that same ride was unquestionably awful though. It was 96F when I set off, and every single crank of the pedals was unpleasant.
However, I’ve ridden the same trails with my wife, pulling my son in his trailer, and it’s been one of the best rides of my life. I love spending time with them, so the fact that the trail still isn’t picturesque, it still doesn’t have any interesting technical riding, with the right people it’s massively fun.
The same can be reversed though.
If I ride up Mount Hamilton by myself, I love it. It’s only 25 miles from my house, but it’s pretty much all uphill. It’s about a 4300ft climb, so it’s a hard ride.
It’s a lot of fun though. Hard work, but rewarding, and through beautiful scenery. The view from the top is fantastic. The ride back down is awesome too.
If I did that ride with my wife and son, remember the people who make the relatively boring Guadalupe Trail so much fun, it would be awful.
Pulling my son up 4300′ would finish me. We’d be going so slowly he wouldn’t enjoy it. My wife would want to keep getting off and walking.
So, cycling can be a lot of fun, depending on a lot of different factors. Those same factors, in a different combination, can also make cycling the most miserable activity in the world.
